Stitt Plays Bird

I've listened to Bird's version of Au Privave many times. When I was very young and needed to escape a critical and conventional world, I played my favorite albums alone in my room over and over again. One of these was a Bird album. One just becomes so familiar with the arrangements (I am not a musician). Au Privave was one of the most elevating tunes with which I became familiar. The monaural recording became difficult to listen to years later. Then I heard the Stitt rendition of Au Privave on my XM radio and couldn't believe how great it was to hear it again. It was so true to Parker's arrangement. It just brought me back to my youth and made me think of how poignant that piece is to be so powerful to me for so long. Stitt really created a wonderful tribute in a beautiful way.

I think to rate Stitt in terms of Parker does both a dis-service. As a professional horn man for over 30 years I can say that to play in someone elses shadow is really tough, knowing everyone in the world will be making comparisons. It takes a special personality to pay tribute to a fallen talent and (competitor) . Sonny Stitt , in my mind was equal to and, in some cases better than Parker. Sonny was always soft airy and Desmond -like, not hammering out the fingerings and burning the resonators from the horn. Stitt will always be my favorite articulator and phrasing artist on Tenor and alto. Yes not Coltrane or Bird. They all are great, in their own genre.

This is great

I think sonny stitt has his own style. He played Parker's songs in alto sax. Since i like alto sax more than tenor, this album is so good to me. Recording quality is not bad. If you like Charlie Parker, you should buy this album

Genre: Jazz

Years Active: '40s, '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s

Charlie Parker has had many admirers and his influence can be detected in numerous styles, but few have been as avid a disciple as Sonny Stitt. There was almost note-for-note imitation in several early Stitt solos, and the closeness remained until Stitt began de-emphasizing the alto in favor of the tenor, on which he artfully combined the influences of Parker and Lester Young. Stitt gradually developed his own sound and style, though he was never far from Parker on any alto solo. A wonderful blues...
