Album Review

Finally Komeda's first album and following EP are more widely available. Originally issued on Swedish label North of No South, Pop På Svenska (1993) and Plan 714 Till (1995) have since been available only as rare imports or at Komeda's shows, until supply finally trickled down to nothing. So, when fans (few of whom already owned these) were antsy for another Komeda album three years after 1998's What Makes It Go?, the Minty Fresh label smartly decided to reissue the band's unobtainable Swedish recordings as a two-fer. That's right, all of these songs are in Swedish; although the band had started out writing songs in English, and resumed doing so on the recordings following these, their first album and EP are in their native language. But this won't be enough to keep most people from enjoying the happy intricacies of Komeda's catchy, upbeat grooves and Lena Karlsson's pleasing voice — in fact, you just may learn a little Swedish while dancing along. And please don't expect to find an in-the-rough version of Komeda here, either — overall, the songs are just as tight and impressive as their later work, with the addition of a few interludes and more experimental moments.

Komeda fan? BUY THIS! But not here.

This is great music, and if you are only familiar with the output after 'The Genius Of Komeda', then sample what is here. The funny thing is, they have the whole of the two records here, but iTunes only sells them a song at a time. This is not a "partial" album, but the whole thing. Why? Well, it doesn't matter because you can get the whole thing in mp3 format, from the other service that's named after a big river in South America. Why bother with iTunes in this case?

An indespensible Double-EP for your insatiable Komeda appetite!!!

Not nearly as polished or refined as their later work, but Komeda's sound is already mature and branching out in all directions. These songs are in Komeda's native Swedish tongue, which may be less approachable to some, but I actually like the change and can appreciate the musicianship of Komeda as a whole much more than I would say listening to their English language songs. If you're into lyrics, this may come as a disappointment, but I honestly think this is a brilliant disc that everyone can enjoy. I used to manage a small casual-fine dining restaurant in Atlanta, GA and I played this disc along with Astrud Gilberto, Stan Getz, Miles, Coltrane, and I was always asked "wow, what group is this?" Komeda's sound varies and has Kitsch-pop tendancies while remaining faithful to their Jazz and Bossa Nova influences. Ultimately, Komeda has created a unique sound that is theirs alone. Give it a go, and you'll know what I mean. -Lytton

I love Komeda...

Simply an awesome band!

Formed: 1991

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Named in honor of Krzysztof Komeda, the late jazz musican/film composer best known for his work with Roman Polanski and Ingmar Bergman, the Swedish kitsch-pop outfit Komeda originated in 1991 as the pit band for a Buster Keaton festival. A series of other festival performances followed, with the quartet -- comprised of vocalist Lena Karlsson, guitarist Mattias Nordlander, bassist Marcus Holmberg and Holmberg's brother Jonas on drums -- often renaming themselves Projektor 7 for their cinema-related...
