Editors’ Notes

Foghat retired to Bearsville, N.Y., to record their seventh album with magic-fingered producer Eddie Kramer (Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Kiss). Band frontman Lonesome Dave Peverett said in later interviews that the recording sessions for this album didn’t go smoothly. But that only benefits the listener. Like any classic Who album, the tension here is palpable, and that’s what gives the record verve and heft. Their version of Robert Johnson’s “Sweet Home Chicago” and Elmore James’ “It Hurts Me Too” simply rage and smolder, respectively. Their originals fare as well, albeit with poppier turns. Both “Stone Blue” (the album’s Top 40 single) and “High on Love” match the band’s chugging arena riffage with memorable choruses, while the relatively delicate “Midnight Madness” uses the “I love you” phrase with nary a trace of irony. And “Stay with Me” makes removes any insult out of the phrase “power ballad.” “Easy Money” rocks the house with aplomb while extolling the virtues of hooking up with a woman of means.

This is a very solid album all the way through. Not a bad song on it, and also, no big hit. If you liked Foghat, you need this one. I think it's the best overall album they released.

Foghat specialized in a simple, hard-rocking blues-rock, releasing a series of best-selling albums in the mid-'70s. While the group never deviated from their basic boogie, they retained a large audience until 1978, selling out concerts across America and earning several gold or...
