iTunes Editors’ Notes

This compilation gathers the essential Journey tracks—and not just the obvious radio hits. Sequenced non-chronologically, The Essential Journey focuses on the Steve Perry era, save for “Just the Same Way” from 1979's Evolution, where original singer Gregg Rolie took the mic. The first half of this 32-track collection is top-heavy with chart toppers. Some of the less predictable choices include the breakup ballad “Who’s Crying Now,” the homesick/lovesick serenade “Send Her My Love,” and the sultry “After the Fall,” which punctuated a steamy scene between Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay in the 1983 film Risky Business. The second half boasts a good grip of fan favorites and album cuts, starting with the KISS-sounding hard rocker “Chain Reaction,” followed by the powerful “Message of Love” from the band’s unsuccessful 1996 comeback album Trial by Fire. Other gems include the riff-heavy “Stone in Love,” an endearing rocker with lyrics that poetically muse on coming of age in the '70s. A live version of “The Party’s Over” closes appropriately.

A Definite Must!!!

This double-disc compilation is, without a doubt, the best Journey compilation out there. Almost every song is a must, and when you can purchase all 32 tracks for just 20 dollars, why hesitate? That's like getting twelve greats for free! The first disc is basically a slightly expanded version of their outstanding Greatest Hits CD. On this disc, you'll find almost every song from their Greatest Hits album, along with two other good songs ("When You Love a Woman" and "After the Fall"). Although my favorites from this disc are "Only the Young," "Don't Stop Believin'," "Faithfully," "Any Way You Want It," "Ask the Lonely," "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)," "Girl Can't Help It," and "Send Her My Love," every track on this disc is a must. The second disc contains a number of huge hits, mixed with great, lesser-known songs. My favorites here are "Chain Reaction," "Line of Fire," "Stone In Love," "Be Good to Yourself," "Still They Ride," and "Escape." But, once again, they are all great. Don't even hesitate to press the "Buy Album" button for this one. The only real exception would be if you are like me and already own their Greatest Hits disc. In that case, just get the best ones not covered on their Greatest Hits, and that should do the trick. If you're new to the band and are hesitant about spending twenty dollars on them, go for their Greatest Hits, and then come back here and to their core albums if (or should I say "when?") you want more. There are a few minor hits (such as "Where Were You," "Keep on Runnin'," and "City of the Angels") that aren't covered on this collection, but this does an outstanding job of capturing the band's very best. In summary, if you're looking for a thorough and definitive collection of Journey's greats without having to sort through heaps of filler, definitely look no further than "The Essential Journey." This collection really lives up to its name. Hope this was helpful, and happy listening =)

I LOVE JOURNEY

Journey is one of my all-time favorite bands and this was the cd that introduced me to them, I had heard a couple of their songs on the radio and thought they were a pretty good band so when I saw this CD in the store I went a head and bought it. It is probably one of the best cd purchases I have ever made. So if you are looking for a great cd than look no farther cause you've found it!

During their initial 14 years of existence (1973-1987), Journey altered their musical approach and their personnel extensively while becoming a top touring and recording band. The only constant factor was guitarist Neal Schon, a music prodigy who had been a member of Santana in 1971-1972. The original unit, which was named in a contest on KSAN-FM in San Francisco, featured Schon, bassist Ross Valory, drummer Prairie Prince (replaced by Aynsley Dunbar), and guitarist George Tickner (who left after...
