EDITORS’ NOTES

A Cali emcee who debuted back in 2006 with All Questions Answered on Stones Throw, Roc C comes from the same Oxnard hood as Madlib, Oh No, and Wildchild, though his vocal style is more aggro and streetwise. After several under-the-radar releases (Turn That Sh*t Up, The Transcontinental, and Scapegoat), he returns with Stoned Genius, hoping to make his mark in a crowded scene that always seems to overlook his material. Lyrically, he come with a smoked-out gangster style and is somewhat comparable to cats like Sean Price and Guilty Simpson, riding strong production from Alchemist, Jake One, Lex Luther, and Oh No, among others. Guest rappers include Termanology ("Fly Kicks"), Big Twinz ("Get That"), Chali 2Na ("Bar Catchers"), and Big Pooh & Blu ("Styllions"), all of who tend to overshadow Roc himself on the collabos. There are definitely some clutch selections here, especially "Starchild" and "Open Wounds."

TITLE TIME

About Roc C

Hailing from the same California town, Oxnard, that brought Lootpack and Madlib to the world, Roc 'C' was first introduced to the world with his appearance on Oh No's (another Oxnard native) single "Move, Pt. 2" in 2004. This led to a signing with Stones Throw Records, which released his debut album, All Questions Answered, in 2006. ~ Marisa Brown
