Editors’ Notes

Mick Hucknall was the soulful voice behind Simply Red’s classic ‘80s hit “Holding Back the Years.” Bobby “Blue” Bland is an R&B giant whose songs from the late ‘50s and early 60s defined the era and became standards (“Stormy Monday Blues,” “Farther Up the Road,” “I Pity the Fool”). At 47, the Manchester UK-bred Hucknall decided it was time to tackle the Mempis bluesman’s catalog and bring these classic songs to a new generation. Hucknall’s in much tougher form than you may remember. He attacks “Ain’t That Lovin’ You” with full-on ferocity. “Poverty” begins with a ‘70s disco dance groove, wah-wah guitar and a crashing piano; the song is virtually rebuilt from the ground up. “Stormy Monday Blues” keeps up a manic pace with a kinetic keyboard tracing a tough near-techno rhythm. The seductive purr of Bland’s “I’ll Take Care of You” is given a full-stage production. These aren’t so much covers as reinterpretations filled with surprising decisions.

Customer Reviews

Yes! I love Mick Hucknall's voice. I think it's incredible. He is my favorite male singer. Favorites so far "Cry, Cry, Cry" and "Ain't That Lovin'n You". Can never get enough. Keep the music coming.

Tribute To Bobby

Love this Album! Mick sounds great, and blues is in his soul. Farther up the Road starts the album off to a great start. I really loved the sound in Yolanda and Stormy Monday Blues. Great sound and I bought both down load and CD in the store! Well worth the money.

Mick has always had an amazing voice, proven again and again. My only complaint with him through the years has been the musicians behind him playing routine arrangements and adding nothing to his great talents. On this album, though, the band shines: The horns are crisp, the guitar licks sassy, the keyboards jumpin' . . . Plus, this sounds like the most fun he's had at the mike in years. Ignore the negative (possibly bigotry-motivated) review. Mick's tribute is the work of a mature man, FINALLY with the backing necessary to take the credit he is due.

British vocalist Mick Hucknall got his start in punk music — a far cry from the smooth blend of pop and blue-eyed soul that would later catapult his band, Simply Red, into the international mainstream. Born in Manchester, England, in 1960, Hucknall experienced a musical awakening at the age of 16, when a live performance by the Sex Pistols inspired him to start his own punk band. He promptly formed the Frantic Elevators, an amateur group that released several recordings on local labels throughout...
