iTunes Review

As the more experimental brother in Oasis, Noel Gallagher is now exploring exciting new avenues with High Flying Birds, a band as flexible as whatever a track calls for. Brass, strings, Mellotron, a choir; whatever it takes is brought to sonic perfection by Gallagher’s longtime producer Dave Sardy, who nudged Gallagher to take his demos to a real Los Angeles studio. Traces of The Kinks can be heard in the ramshackle “The Death of You and Me,” “Soldier Boys and Jesus Freaks,” and “Dream On,” which revisits Ray Davies’ “Sunny Afternoon” and “Dead End Street.” There’s a grand scope to tunes like “(I Wanna Live in a Dream in My) Record Machine” and “Everybody’s on the Run.” Where Liam Gallagher’s Beady Eye stuck to Lennon-centric guitar-based rock, Noel’s insights are gentler, lusher, and completely satisfying, as the hooks of “AKA . . . What a Life!” and “If I Had a Gun . . .” make abundantly clear. The deluxe edition includes the deliciously dreamy “Let the Lord Shine a Light on Me,” the driving “The Good Rebel,” and the essential “A Simple Game of Genius,” which ranks among his best tunes.

I bought this album with the money I saved by not buying Beady Eye's garbage. Thank you, Noel. You are God. That is all.

What You Notice... that the less Noel wrote on the last few Oasis' albums, the farther away they sounded from the Oasis that grabbed us immediately. This is the best thing from either Gallagher since "(What's The Story) Morning Glory" and clearly shows Noel's writing was the genius that Liam's voice complemented so perfectly. Put down the pop guns boys and reunite. But let Noel write 75% - at least, maybe more like 90% - of the songs and you'll be golden again. Well, done, Noel! I may put on a kettle of tea and listen a hundred times...

NOTE: to the inevitable reviewers who will give this one star: you're all complete idiots. Get a job.

This is Amazing!!

I have been waiting for mounts for this. It sound like the antidote that can fix American music!

Having left Oasis the previous year after a typically turbulent, backstage row with brother Liam at Manchester's Heaton Park, the eldest Gallagher sibling's first official foray into a "solo" career took off in 2010 with Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, featuring the talents of Gallagher, former Oasis keyboard player Mike Rowe, Lemon Trees drummer Jeremy Stacey, and percussionist Lenny Castro. Cut from the same arena-sized, melodic Brit-pop cloth as the band he helped bring to prominence in the...
