EDITORS’ NOTES

After investigating UK club culture on 2014’s The London Sessions, Mary J. Blige returns to hip-hop soul to process her broken marriage. Survivor’s spirit, regal horns, and a bravura verse from Kanye West combine on invigorating opener “Love Yourself,” while her F-you vocal outshines a supporting cast of Missy Elliott, DJ Khaled, and Migos’ Quavo on “Glow Up.” Turning pain into compelling music has long been Blige’s trademark, but her choice of inventive producers—particularly KAYTRANADA on “Telling the Truth”’s glitchy soul—keeps pushing her sound forward.

Mary never disappoints!

The pre-releases are all 🔥🔥💥💥. I cannot wait until the whole project is released. Normally I don't write reviews until I have heard the whole album, but I believe from what I've heard that this will be some of her best work in a while. That's saying something since The London Sessions album was magnificent. I'll edit this if my opinion changes.

SMH Mary! I expected better than this

I am a HUGE Mary fan! However, this album is not that good. Mary please go back to singing in ur mid register. Your high notes just aren't there anymore like they were on the Breakthrough and Growing Pains. The majority of the songs are BORING. And sum songs seem to pop and not R&B/Hip Hop Soul...I wasn't expecting a My Life album, but I was expecting better than this. This is like another My Life 2. Expected sumthin great and was let down. Please go back to the drawing board. This is not what people expected. We want good R&B and Hip Hop Soul.

Thank you Mrs. Blige

In this day and age when all the artists of yesterday cause my ears a lot of pain, this woman is still the best in her genre. All three songs are incredible so far…can't wait for the rest of the album.
