Customer Reviews

very good

I bought this album for the no.11, so I can't comment on the other quartets, but as far as i can tell, the Emerson come closest to Beethoven's own suggested tempo markings (92 to the half note in the first mvt!!!!!) of anyone on iTunes. Some might call the tempos excessively fast, but they're actually pretty accurate. The performance they give is technically brilliant, and shows spot on attention to dynamic detail. This is a very exciting recording to listen to for the beethovenphile.

Beethoven and Emerson a Perfect Match

The Emerson String Quartet is undoubtedly the best out there. Everyone knows that. But, by releasing this album, they're simply rubbing our faces in it. In a good way. The Razumovsky Quartets are astounding in their recognition of the subtle harmonics of the piece, the 13th and 14th deserve reviews of their own they're so good, and the 16th captures the spirit of Beethoven as he struggled to stay alive, and finally accepted that it had to happen. In fact, in the manuscript for that particular quartet, Beethoven wrote "Muß es Sein? Es Muß Sein," meaning, "Must it be? It must be." This album is absolutely worth the money. Seize the opportunity and delight yourself with some of the very best of Beethoven.

Good but not best

This is the best complete Beethoven cycle on iTunes but hardly the best on cd. The talichs, alban berg and italian quartets are all superior but sadly unavailable as complete cycles here.

The group's reputation partially rests upon its daring interpretations of core string quartet repertory; it has performed the complete quartet cycles of Beethoven, Shostakovich, Mendelssohn, and Bartók in major concert halls around the world, and its interpretations tend toward the personal, the passionate, and even the hell-for-leather. Audiences have responded...
