Album Review

Released through the producer's RJ's Electrical Connections label, STS X RJD2 is a case of an up-and-coming talent collaborating with an established and revered beatmaker, and all the jaw-dropping moments come from the former with the latter in tow. Key cut "Hold on, Here It Go" finds STS kickin' out hard truths in the form of punch lines, as "The revolution won't be televised because the ratings would be horrible" brings the apathy of the connected generation into question. The Atlanta-born, Philly-based rapper does so in an attractive style with a voice somewhere between Q-Tip and Digable Planets' Craig "Doodlebug" Irving, plus his flow is rapid, as wit-filled lines and layered arguments whip by, making everything he says benefit from a second, a third, or more listens. RJD2 is right in the pocket with the sunshine soul of his 2013 album More Is Than Isn't making a mighty return, and while the inspiration of Chance the Rapper's Acid Rap mixtape certainly seems heavy, numbers such as "Monsters Under My Bed" take the album to a place much more composed and cinematic. All and all, this is an excellent debut for STS plus an inspired, proud showcase for RJD2, who can now moonlight as a talent scout whenever he chooses.

Don't Hate, Celebrate

RJD2 is an accomplished producer. STS is one of the most talented underground MCs out currently. He sounds like Andre 3000, both in delivery, and lyricism. Both are adept at storytelling, creating a narrative that captures its audience. It is a huge compliment to STS, as we all know of Andre 3000's legendary skills.
On this album, RJD2 sonically compliments his accompanying artist better than he ever has. The collaboration is the best underground album, imho, since Blu & Exile released, Below The Heavens. This album is destined to become a classic, and to this fan it already is.

AWESOME

As we all know, RJ is a great disc jockey who does not dissappoint. Expect this album to be great.

#GOLD

STS is one of my all time favorite MC’s. This album will hopefully open peoples eyes to him and give him the recognition he deserves.

RJD2's music is a collage of cut-and-paste hip-hop that combines disparate elements to make for soulful, moody portraits of the world. Born Ramble John Krohn in Eugene, Oregon, on May 27, 1976, he moved to Columbus, Ohio a few years later and was raised there. He first busted out onto the hip-hop scene in 1998 -- a time when producers were emerging from the shadows to seize the spotlight -- as the DJ/producer for the Columbus-based group Megahertz.
