EDITORS’ NOTES

A two-man group from Santa Cruz, Calif., Cruzmatik serve up a party-forward rap style loaded with straight-up and nonthreatening rhymes about various intoxicants, cool sneakers, fancy sunglasses, and California pride. The production is super-slick and relentlessly catchy, with big sung choruses, freaky synth squiggles, and gigantic bass booms; it's absolutely ideal for a raucous college kegger and/or a cell phone commercial. (Think The Black Eyed Peas meets LMFAO meets Shwayze). On this six-song EP, Cruzmatik gives us a Patron-soaked party anthem ("Party Don't Stop"), a home-state shoutout ("California Grown"), and a crunk rock–flavored pep talk ("Motivate") before taking a sharp left turn on the folksy indie-rock-style closer "Time Alone." Whether Cruzmatik has the luck (and timing) to hit it big remains to be seen, but for fans of modern genre-bending pop music, these guys could definitely be your next new favorite group.
