iTunes Review

Whether it is his side project the Horrible Crowes or his band the Gaslight Anthem, it sounds like Brian Fallon. Just as the Anthem’s 2010 album American Slang indicated, Fallon has a love of atmospheric folk ballads in need of being saved from his punk group. On tracks such as “Sugar,” “I Witnessed A Crime,” “Cherry Blossoms” and “Blood Loss,” Fallon aches like he’s Paul Westerberg in the bloodied streets. Collaborator Ian Perkins lurks in the background on bass and slide guitars while Fallon takes centerstage. “Go Tell Everybody” and “Crush” extend the Springsteen comparisons, the former with a vamping rhythm and both with a dramatic rasp. Where the Anthem play with unerring precision, the Crowes let things boil gradually and naturally. Romeo is surely bleeding for the noir-scape of “Ladykiller,” where Fallon takes Greg Dulli’s Twilight Singers and injects heartland rock. “Go Tell Everybody” breaks out the horns for a celebration of one man’s hardened cynicism. “I Believe Jesus Brought Us Together” evokes the serious passion of Mark Lanegan’s best work.

Do yourself a favor and buy this album.

I've been waiting for this record's release since I found out Fallon was putting this side project together. I listened to the free streaming of the album that Rolling Stone offered, and it completely blew my mind. It does exactly what Fallon and Perkins intended it to do. It is a night time album. I'm sure I'll listen to it at every hour of the day, but it is definitely a record that you can put on in the evening and sit back, relax, and contemplate all the imagery and stories that The Horrible Crowes elaborate on througout the course of Elsie. Fallon is a musician that takes inspirations from way back and incorporates them into his music in such a way that it puts him WAYYY ahead of his time. Well done, gents.

Unbelievable Lyrics

These lyrics are so pure, filled with such raw emotion that are apparent in each word that Brian Fallon sings. This man is a true poet with his words that are as classic as a '57 Chevy.
I am amazed.

A gift to us all

A gift for those with musical ears! Well worth the wait. Brian Fallon delivers again, opening the doors to a different outlet that seems to prove just as beautiful. All that needs to be said is Thank you!

Formed: 2011 in New Jersey

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '10s

Taking a short break from the Gaslight Anthem in early 2011, frontman Brian Fallon teamed up with guitar tech Ian Perkins to form the Horrible Crowes, an Americana side project named after the “Twa Corbies” folk ballad. Inspired by Tom Waits, Nick Cave, and Mark Lanegan, the Horrible Crowes wrote slow-burning songs that were smokier and more stripped-down than the Gaslight Anthem’s punked-up...
