iTunes Review

As Dana Buoy, Akron/Family drummer Dana Janssen reintroduces himself as a whimsical pop auteur on the sometimes baffling but consistently charming Summer Bodies. These tunes are more benign than Akron/Family’s brand of freak-folk, though they're as rewarding on their own terms. Summer Bodies has the dreamy ambiance of late-‘60s Beach Boys, with a suggestion of Owl City’s wide-eyed spirituality tossed in. Buoy grounds his ethereal impulses in a solid pop craftsmanship that adds definition to the gauzy overlays of vocals, guitars, synths, and percussion he favors. His lyrics are both vivid and slippery: “Anatomy of Now,” “Satellite Ozone," and “We on the Sea” capture a sense of wonder beyond their literal meanings. The bouncy poolside groove of “Call to Be” and the tender balladry of “Come My Side” suggest that Buoy could dash off mainstream hits if he chose. Summer Bodies hits the ear with a gentle touch, but beneath its benign surface is a sharp musical wit that shows further delights on repeated listening.
