Turnstiles

Billy Joel returned to New York from L.A. in the mid-’70s, and this album is the stylish soundtrack to that trip. He opens with the boom-boom-cha beat and Spector-esque wall-of-sound of “Say Goodbye to Hollywood” and sings one of the great love songs to the Big Apple with the Gershwin-like feel and smoky sax of “New York State of Mind.” Whether firing off frenzied clusters of notes in “Prelude/Angry Young Man” or breaking hearts on the gorgeous ballad “Summer, Highland Falls,” Joel shines.
