iTunes Review

With David Lee Roth wandering off for a solo record, the Van Halen brothers officially fired him and recruited former Montrose singer Sammy Hagar to take over the lead vocal slot. Hagar brought discipline with him, and the songs immediately tightened up and lost the cheeky asides that Roth barked with natural authority. As a more standardized heavy metal/hard rock combo, the new Van Halen had immediate crowd-pleasers with "Why Can't This Be Love," "Dreams," and "Best of Both Worlds," where Eddie's shocking guitarwork found a comfortable, more conventional format to color. The tuneful mastery on "Summer Nights" could only come from his hands. The rhythm section of bassist Michael Anthony and drummer Alex Van Halen remained the glue that ensured the group was better than the competition. Where other hard rock bands often trudged, Van Halen glided. Even the hustle and bustle of the Sammy Hagar workout "Get Up" has a fluid sense that only comes from musicians with a natural feel for the pocket.

This Album

While everybody else rocks out to screamo and Fall Out Boy, I'm listening to Kiss and Aerosmith. While my friends listen to My Chemical Romance, Boys like Girls, Plane White T's, I'm still listening to Led Zepplin, Hendrix, Beatles, Edgar Winter, Steve Miller Band, Blue Oyster Cult, and others. I'm the woman of the classics, along with todays artists that stay true to that unique flare of yesterday. My Dad's favorite album by Van Halen is 5150, because it contains one of his favorite songs: "Love Walks In". Eddie and the rest of the band made a masterpiece here. 5 stars for the amazing Van Halen boyz!

The Return

After A Successful Tour (1984 Tour), David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen Hated Each Other and David Was Gone. Sammy Hagar Came In and Began Singing Songs That Eddie Had Already Written Prior To David Lee Roth's Departure, Which Lends A Hand To Why "5150" is The Only Album On Sammy Hagar's Van Halen List That Actually Rocks, and Dosen't Sound To Far Off From The Typical David Lee Roth Sound. Good Enough, Get Up, Summer Nights and Maybe Best Of Both Worlds Could've All Been Sang By David Lee Roth. Overall This Is A Satisfying Addition To Van Halen's Cataloge Whether You Love Or Hate Sammy Hagar.

Great Van Hagar debut

One of Van Halen's best albums. Best songs are Why Can't This Be Love, Love Walks In, and Dreams but just buy the whole thing!

With their 1978 eponymous debut, Van Halen simultaneously rewrote the rules of rock guitar and hard rock in general. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen redefined what the electric guitar could do, developing a blindingly fast technique with a variety of self-taught two-handed tapping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and effects that mimicked the sounds of machines and animals. It was wildly inventive and over the top, equaled only by vocalist David Lee Roth, who brought the role of a metal singer to near-performance...
