Album Review

Much like their hometown of San Luis Obispo, California, which lies midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, Fialta, who take their name from a Vladimir Nabokov short story, alternate between vistas sun-kissed and fog-bound, offering up an evocative 12-track debut that's tailor-made for cruising up and down the Pacific Coast Highway, whatever the weather. Comprised of couples Michael Leibovich and Beth Clements, and David Provenzano and Sarah Shotwell (imagine if the Mates of State married Matt & Kim) the band specializes in cleverly arranged, erudite pop confections with lots of handclaps, glockenspiel, and ukulele, all of which are peppered with crystalline harmonies of the "oooh" and "ahhh" varieties. Despite its nod to the coldest of seasons, the 12-track Summer Winter leans heavier on the former than the latter, with highlights arriving via the infectious, Jukebox the Ghost-esque "Photographs," the moody, wet pavement pounding, rainy night ponderings of the albums' first single "Cars," and the impossibly jaunty title track, which like much of this melodious and likeable, yet undeniably millennial collection of public radio/industrial coffee chain-approved daydream jams, handles the precarious spinning plates of suburban folk, self aware indie pop and local musical theater with the keen precision of the home schooled.

So proud of Fialta!!!

This band AND the album are SOLID. I feel very privileged to have heard the album being made over the past few years. And I couldn't be more proud of them for striking the difficult balance of sounds that so many debut albums only ever hope to achieve. Look out for this band, people!! They have so many more surprises waiting for us.

Fresh, New, Beautiful

If you are looking for new music that really feels new, this is it. They have such a fresh style that waxes poetic with deep yet playful lyrics. All their voices are talented and beautiful and you'll hear a mix of them on different tracks.

Just get it already!

This album is truly a labor of love, but you don't need to know the back story to fall head over heels with it. This is my perfect summer soundtrack-it already feels like it's going to be one of those time-capsule albums that will always take me back to this summer. Gorgeous vocals combined with unique arrangements and instrumentation, this album will have you singing, whistling, and hand-clapping along. LOVE

Years Active: '10s

Specializing in smart, ornate, summery, and bookish (they took their name from a Vladimir Nabokov short story called Spring in Fialta) indie pop, San Luis Obispo, California-based pop confectioners Fialta formed in 2011 around the talents of married couples Michael Leibovich and Beth Clements and David Provenzano and Sarah Shotwell. Relying on offbeat instrumentation and alternating vocals that have drawn comparisons to acts like She & Him, Mates of State, and the Weepies, the tight-knit group released...
