Album Review

The Best of Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong from Verve contains a selection of 15 duets the two jazz legends recorded for the label over the years. Clearly, this set isn't of particular interest to hardcore collectors, since they'll already own much of the material, but as a sampler targeted at casual fans, this is quite nice indeed, since it contains such timeless classics as "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off," "Stars Fell on Alabama, " "Autumn in New York, " "Summertime," and "They Can't Take That Away from Me."

Customer Reviews

Songs are fantastic, quality of them, not so much...

I had this cd in real life in the past, but lost it, so i thought this might be a nice substitute. I love the songs, but the quality of the downloads is crappy. The songs sound like they have static in them. For a digital copy of a classic song, the quality is worse than if i had it on vinyl.

good lord!

this cd's pretty sweet i liked anything except jazz untilll i first heard what a wonderful world by louis. 170 times listening to that song later (which is the most on my itunes library by about 75) i looked up some more stuff by louis armstrong, and this is what i got a good, relaxing album that is good to fall asleep to even if you dont like jazz, youll love this cd

TWO OF THE GREATEST

This is a great place to start, but search out the 3 disc set that Verve put out a few years back. These tracks were selected from that collection.

"The First Lady of Song," Ella Fitzgerald was arguably the finest female jazz singer of all time (although some may vote for Sarah Vaughan or Billie Holiday). Blessed with a beautiful voice and a wide range, Fitzgerald could outswing anyone, was a brilliant scat singer, and had near-perfect elocution; one could always understand the words she sang. The one fault was that, since she always sounded so happy to be singing, Fitzgerald did not always dig below the surface of the lyrics she interpreted...
