Though 1969’s double LP Trout Mask Replica is considered Captain Beefheart’s landmark album, the good Captain, Don Van Vliet, preferred the follow-up, 1970’s Lick My Decals Off, Baby. That album and his two bluesier 1972 releases (The Spotlight Kid and Clear Spot) are here, along with a fourth collection of outtakes that includes alternate versions of “Dirty Blue Gene” that appeared on 1980’s Doc at the Radar Station. The appearance of “Her Eyes Are a Blue Million Miles” in The Big Lebowski and its cover by The Black Keys raised Beefheart’s profile before his 2010 death.
