iTunes Review

Issued on New Year’s Day 2008 as a digital-only EP, American Gothic offers further evidence that Billy Corgan was feeling recharged with 2007’s Zeitgeist and had more material than he could put in one place. The four songs here represent different sides of Corgan's music, with “The Rose March” an acoustic-led track worthy of T Rex’s Marc Bolan. “Again, Again, Again (The Crux)” is a near-jangly pop song done in Corgan’s idiosyncratic way. “Pox” hits a hard rock funk that lands in that alt-rock sweet spot that defined the '90s, complete with near-dissonant harmonies. “Sunkissed,” another psychedelic folk song with tripped-out keyboards, horns, and electricity, fills out this side trip through Corgan’s more reflective (but no less inventive) side.

Customer Reviews

How could you dislike Zeitgeist for the fact that it "doesn't sound like they're old stuff"? It's just plain stupid to say that. They hadn't came out with a new album for what, 8 years or so, and you were expecting just a bunch of the same sound? LEMME SAY IT AGAIN; 8 YEARS. Your music wouldn't sound exactly the same either. Plus, it DOES INDEED still have their great sound. The fact that they are rock geniuses hasn't changed at all.

This is one of the SP's softer melodies, and its quite good. Its pretty much all Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin though. The best song on this EP is definately Sunkissed.

Fabulous EP

This is reminiscent of the old Alice in Chains acoustic EP masterpieces. It is one of the best things I've heard from the pumpkins in a while especially after the Zeitgeist disapiontment. Wonderful EP and I hope the pumpkins will cranks some more out in the years to come!

Of all the major alternative rock bands of the early '90s, the Smashing Pumpkins were the group least influenced by traditional underground rock. Lead guitarist/songwriter Billy Corgan fashioned an amalgam of progressive rock, heavy metal, goth rock, psychedelia, and dream pop, creating a layered, powerful sound driven by swirling, distorted guitars. Corgan was wise enough to exploit his angst-ridden lyrics, yet he never shied away from rock star posturing, even if he did cloak it in allegedly ironic...
