Album Review

Sass Jordan never sounded more focused, confident and inspired than she does on Rats, which is undeniably her finest album. Some of Jordan's '80s efforts didn't fully illustrate just how compelling a singer she can be, but that's no problem on Rats. This CD finds the whiskey-voiced Canadian doing what she does best: tough, gritty, no-nonsense rock & roll with soul/R&B overtones and a heavy dose of blues feeling. Although Jordan is very much her own person, there's no denying the strong influence Tina Turner has had on her singing — and Turner's influence serves Jordan impressively well on such gutsy, down-and-dirty offerings as "Ugly," "Damaged" and "Pissin' Down." If fact, this is the sort of rockin' album one wishes Turner would have recorded in 1994 (which isn't to say that the slick, glossy pop/rock and pop/R&B Turner provided in the 1990s wasn't enjoyable). With Jordan, Steve Salas and Nick Didia handling the production and studio ace Michael Wagener doing most of the mixing, all of the pieces fit together perfectly on Rats. This album was definitely Jordan's crowning achievement.

Close Your Eyes - Conjure Up Janis

I don't know whose voice more transubstantiates Janis Joplin, Sass Jordan or Joan Osbourne. Sass had a lot to do to best her fantabulous album "Racine" and I expected that feat to be impossible. "Rats" absolutely blew me away. Give me an iPod full of Sass Jordan and I can live happily ever after. P.S. Sass, please get back in the studio and give us another Racine/Rats type effort. I'll be first in line to shell out the $$ for it.

Now This is Rock!!

"Rats" ROCKS from top to bottom. Sass has a set of pipes that few in music can compare or woman. The band put together for this album is amazing. This is not straight forward power cord rock here. The band is able to create subtle nuances at the drop of a hat whether it be during a down turn in one of the rockers or if it is for an entire song for one of the slower tracks. The recording technique used for this album is the icing on the cake. It is a "live sound" recording and it shows off Sass's powerful voice and how tight the band really is.

Rock Star Supernova

My first exposure to Sass Jordan was when Dana Andrews covered High Road Easy on the TV show Rock Star: Supernova this week (July 19, 2006). Dana knocked it out of the park, but Sass kicks every female rocker's butt on that show. She could front Tommy Lee, Jason Newsted & Gilby Clark, tomorrow and make SUPERNOVA a huge success! Sometimes I can hear a little Melissa Ethridge in her voice, but Sass is truly unique and has an awesome voice. Can't believe it took me 12 years to discover her talent. Interestingly the overall sound of this album isn't dated at all. It could have been cut in 2006 --- goes to show you how classic this album is. Buy the whole album - each song is captivating! Thank you Dana, and thank you Sass for making my ears happy!

The Montreal native became a national success with the album-titled single and released Racine in 1992, and Rats two years later.
