EDITORS’ NOTES

Bogotá’s long-running electro-cumbia act embraces a new direction on this mostly acoustic excursion into tropical worldbeat. UK ex-pat Richard Blair summons his crew of Afro-Colombian percussionists and singers, replacing drum ‘n’ bass cumbia instrumentation with traditional shakers and kalimba. The result is a multilayered tribute to Caribbean orquestras, exemplified by hypnotic opener “Fuego Que Te Llama,” where flutes slowly amass and propulsive hand drums churn onward. While the vibe remains organic, Blair does insert some digital tricks, from dub edits pulsing away on “Magangué” to trippy psych drones on “Song For The Sinner.”

Splib2,

Great music. these tunes grow big smiles.

Sidestepper is back!!!

Fireplace Chat,

This new album is great! It’s been so long since their last one, and they’ve made changes to their sound — more organic, more (but not completely) acoustic — that really showcase the fabulous vocalists. You can hear the skin on the drums, and the shakers in the very fine recording. Breezy, airy Caribbean vibe — still totally danceable as ever!

About Sidestepper

The project of British producer Richard Blair, Sidestepper fuses a Latin aesthetic with the late '90s electronic dance music aesthetic, resulting in a dancefloor-friendly hybrid that presents a refreshing alternative to the often formulaic sound of electronic dance music. Blair first fostered his passion for Latin sounds while living in Colombia. Later, once he moved to the U.K., he found substantial interest and influence in the fledging British club scene, driven by DJ-spun electronic dance music records. Since few were exploiting the merger of these two sounds, Blair did just that, resulting in a fresh sound showcased first in late 1999 on the Logozo EP. A year later, a full-length album titled More Grip was released. ~ Jason Birchmeier
