Editors’ Notes

Punk icon Exene Cervenka is a creative cyclone, moving effortlessly from music to visual arts to poetry and spoken word. Her first solo musical release since 1991’s Running Scared, Somewhere Gone revisits that territory, trading the more boisterous approach of other side projects such as the Original Sinners and the Knitters for a more vulnerable, singer-songwriter sound, with poetic overtones. Accompanied by strummed acoustic and electric guitars, delightfully restrained drums and moody, faint keyboards, Exene’s voice is really the focus, and her skillful delivery of a style that veers towards sweetness, without ever quite getting there, clearly and distinctly brands her work. Though the delightful twang of “Trojan Horse,” the interplay of dark guitar strumming and sad strings on “Somewhere Gone,” and the folksy tweeness of “Why Is It So” is enough to get lost in, we admit to letting our imagination run a bit, sometimes filtering these songs through Cervenka’s original voice with punk band X just for fun. Surprise! These songs rock, both ways.

Ghosts on a Highway

Exene gives us a lovely album of memories, melancholy and big skies. A break from her recent rock releases; it harkens back to her first two solo releases. A must for fans

heartfelt and beautiful

Get this! The other reviewer is correct in that it does harken back to Exene's first two solo releases. The lyrics are gorgeos as is the sound. A bit of a Calexico feel here. Not a depressing record, but I can't help but feeling sad considering Exene's recent diagnosis with MS. Please support this brilliant artist.

Exene back to her form

This collection is so good, so reminiscence of Running Sacred and Old Wives Tales. I find her voice such a comfort. I was not expecting this release, so am just beyond happy to find this on iTunes. It hurts a bit to see this so under reviewed here. Hello people, Exene Cervenka from X...the only L.A. punk band that ever mattered. I recommend this without hestitation. Is it a classic...no. But my god, this is good music and such a sweet thing to put on and just chill. Thank you Exene. I hope you feel the love.
