iTunes Review

Diana Ross’ third solo album (released in 1971) is a sturdy machine of strings and pulled heartstrings, all held together by the beautifully dramatic arrangements of unsung Motown man Paul Riser and the wonderful songs of Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson. (An exception is Ross' surprisingly wistful take on The Four Tops' 1966 hit “Reach Out I’ll Be There.”) Gentle ballads, midtempo R&B, and light soul rule here, with lots of uplifting choruses and brass blasts. It’s an interesting album because it finds Ross focused solely on her singing—she’s not yet the international diva or A-list Hollywood actress she soon would be. (She hit international fame a year later starring as Billie Holiday in Lady Sings the Blues.) Ross can be vulnerable (both “Remember Me” and “And If You See Him” recall the brokenhearted voice from The Supremes) and impermeable to pain (especially on the funked-up “I’m a Winner”). She here reveals all the gifts of her voice, the ability to express extreme sadness or joy with an almost inhuman dynamic range. This extended version adds alternate mixes and few song demos from the sessions.

Surrender 2008 release

I always thought this was a great album. Although the songs are not new, the various versions and alternative cuts only prove further the capabilities of Ms. Ross. The cuts are vibrant and interesting. I can't resist playing the alternative cuts over and over. This is an exciting release

Dana Can't Give Back the Love We Feel For Her (because it's overwhelming)

One of Dianas all time classic albums: The extras are skimpy, wanted unreleased gems like on previous releases but its a great CD still. The highlights include: Surrender, Can't Give Back, And If You See Him, Didn't You Know, A Simple Thing Like Cry, All The Befores and I'm Still Waiting. Fans also love Reach Out I'll Be There.

Finally

Finally re-released, this album if further proof that Diana Ross under the direction of Ashford and Simpson is Diana at her finest. While track for track not as strong as her solo debut, this album features similar production, orchestration and vocal strengths. Recommended!

As a solo artist, Diana Ross is one of the most successful female singers of the rock era. If you factor in her work as the lead singer of the Supremes in the 1960s, she may be the most successful. With her friends Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, and Barbara Martin, Ross formed the Primettes vocal quartet in 1959. In 1960, they were signed to local Motown Records, changing their name to the Supremes in 1961. Martin then left, and the group continued as a trio. Over the next eight years, the Supremes...
