Album Review

While Coal Chamber's self-titled debut album doesn't sound all that original (White Zombie and Korn are obvious touchstones), they are certainly one of the better bands in the so-called alternative metal genre. Their sound is noisy and powerful, they seem to approach the music with strong emotional commitment, and B. Dez Fafara's vocals are appealingly left-of-center. It's not always consistent — the riffs aren't always memorable (often due to the use of only two notes), "Amir of the Desert" is an annoying throwaway, and "Sway" earns debit points for recycling the "the roof, the roof, the roof is on fire" chant yet again. For the most part, though, Coal Chamber marks this band as one to watch, and fans of the genre will almost certainly enjoy the record.

These letters are driving me crazy, they're driving me so f@%^ing crazy

I saw Coal Chamber on the second stage of the very first OzzFest in 1996 (wow 11 years ago) and have been a Coal Chamber fan since. I bought this album as soon as it was released and it played in heavy rotation through my late teens and early 20's. Buy this whole album and it won't dissapoint. This isn't a metal album with death growls and blistering guitar solos, you can understand and relate to the content. Perfect for angst ridden teens. Coal Chamber got a lot of criticism for sounding like Korn and that drop D style guitar, and while there are similarities, Coal Chamber rocks just as hard on this debut album as Korn did on theirs.

when i was a kid i saw this movie called "Strangland" it was this creepy movie about a guy who used to torture people in his basement, but after that movie had brought to the door of the dark side. the credits ran and a music video came on, coal chamber and it pushed me the rest of the way to the dark side. coal chamber is a great metal band there sound is a great main stream sound, if you need a little pick me up what better way but then to start it off with "loco" fast paced & hard hitting.

Coal Chamber broke out of the Los Angeles alternative metal scene in 1997 with a sound often compared to Korn, although both bands formed around the same time and are quality representations of the scene's overall sound — the heavy, detuned guitars of the murkiest Black Sabbath; grungy, noisy textures reminiscent of White Zombie or Tool; the...
