iTunes Review

“Sweet Cherry Wine” is the exquisite pop hit. However, this is a very intriguing and challenging album coming from a man who was mostly known as a singles artist. His string of 19 hit singles is among the finest accomplishments of the ‘60s, but this album proves he could get as weird and heavy as his hard rock contemporaries. The title track is nearly ten minutes of organ and spaced-out guitar jamming that sounds like James has been listening intensely to Pink Floyd. “Makin’ Good Time” works off the group’s oft-overlooked R&B roots. “Evergreen” follows in the troubadour tradition of Donovan. “Papa Rolled His Own” is a goofy little number that sounds like the group is approximating the Kinks’ interest in English Hall music. “I Know Who I Am” is a lean acoustic guitar rocker with a rockabilly twist. This grand eclecticism makes for an album that is impossible to pigeonhole and one of the most delightful of the late ‘60s.

Sweet Cherry Wine

The song is not about drinking to solve your, it is actually about Jesus. Sweet Cherry Wine equates to the blood of Jesus. "To save us, he gave us...Sweet Cherry very fine... drink it right down...pass it all intoxicating...Sweet Cherry Wine! It is also a mild protest song to the Viet Nam War, but Tommy James finds ultimate salvation in the blood of Jesus! A beautiful song, and stirring lyrics!

A Psychedelic Concert

Oringally released in 1969 on the Roulette label, this ablum came out right after the Crimson and Clover album. There are some interesting sounds on this album. This was back in the day when a synthesizer took up an entire room. This was incedible music back in its day.

Another great album

A good album by a well-known band

Tommy James & the Shondells -- the very mention of their name, even to someone who doesn't really know their music, evokes images of dances and the kind of fun that rock & roll represented before it redefined itself on more serious terms. And between 1966 and 1969, the group enjoyed 14 Top 40 hits, most of which remain among the most eminently listenable (if not always respected) examples of pop/rock. The group was almost as much of a Top 40 radio institution of the time as Creedence Clearwater Revival,...
