iTunes Review

In the 1960s, Charles Lloyd led a popular quartet whose Coltrane-influenced sound appealed to rock audiences as well as to jazz fans. (One of his most successful albums was Forest Flower, a live outing recorded at the 1966 Monterey Jazz Festival.) More than forty years later, Lloyd is still leading excellent bands and still playing great live sets, as is evidenced on the 2008 release, Rabo de Nube. Recorded in Basel in 2007, the album finds Lloyd leading a quartet comprised of pianist Jason Moran, bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Eric Harland. The album features six originals — including the Lloyd classic “Sweet Georgia Bright”— and a cover of “Rabo de Nube,” which was written by the Cuban singer/songwriter Silvio Rodriguez. Lloyd is as impressive as ever on tenor saxophone and flute, and he also plays tarogato, a Hungarian wind instrument, on “Ramanujan.” Moran is extraordinary throughout: the pianist stands out whether he is making placid statements or spinning out elaborate solos.

Rabo De Nube

Fiery new configuration of the Lloyd quartet. Jason Moran switches things up quite a bit from Gerry Allen's light touch on the piano. Eric Harland is amazing again and continues to carry the torch after his blazing performances on Sangam and Jumping the Creek. Reuben Rogers holds the whole thing down nicely. Charles Lloyd's unwavering comittment to change and the evolution of the music never ceases to amaze me. At his age he is still pushing the limits of Jazz and all the while staying true to the beautifully creative principles that have guided his past efforts. You will not be dissapointed with this download.

another evolution

Jason Moran in the piano chair, Lloyd knows how to brings in new and exciting talent (Eric Harland after Billy Higgins, wow!), that ethereal sound and space, watch his group live if you ever get the chance, while most sax greats who are 70 are content to run thru "old hits", Lloyd evolves, which makes you want to hit the "download" button right now.

kind of a trance

Lloyd's newest is great. See his group live, like I saw last night in San Diego. This recording is just the start. Or get his Sangam too for something extra special. He is an original.
