Album Review

Just as fans were beginning to wonder if the duo Curve would ever return from their self-imposed exile, they returned with their best album to date, Come Clean. Still combining largely electronic music with alternative hooks and lines, members Toni Halliday and Dean Garcia returned to a now-popular form of music they helped create years ago. Although the album's two best tracks had previously appeared on their late-1997 EP Chinese Burn (the title tracks from both the EP and the full-length), there are plenty of other strong tracks in attendance. "Something Familiar" may be the band's most melodically accessible track yet, while the extremely overdriven distortion and abrasive tones of "Dogbone" are just the opposite. Unlike many electronic bands, the duo makes it clear that they don't just go for musical overkill, as evidenced by the slow electronic groove contained in "Killer Baby," and the mid-paced dance-rock of "Cotton Candy." Come Clean is the welcome return of a band that deserved attention when it first appeared years ago, and may get it in the electro-friendly late '90s.

Curve Is Great

If you like Curve and you don't have this disc, then it is no-brainer and a must have. A slicker feel with a greater range of sound, Come Clean is a great mix. A problem with listening to the samples here is that often these songs take their time to build or switch gears, so you'll hear the foundation, but miss the twist and/or the build. I was going to list a few of the stand out tracks and then discovered that I had nearly listed them all (so I did)... CHINESE BURN - Used in a Spiderman trailer. Hard, fast, edge, moves. COMING UP ROSES - The single. More pop-centric, without losing the wall of sound. SOMETHING FAMILIAR - Single-friendly track. DOG BONE - Not a fave, but a decidedly driving, gritty (if drab) track. ALLIGATORS GETTING UP - Sexy, dangerous mix reminiscent of James Bond. DIRTY HIGH - Gritty, catchy, compulsive. KILLER BABY - Fantastic, infectious. SWEETBACK - Used in an add for KCRW that used to play in art house theaters. 'nuff said. COTTON CANDY - Less bite, but a nice rhythmic propulsion FORGOTTEN SANITY - Perverse, ominous, driving, swings on emotion. BEYOND REACH - Ethereal Curve at its absolute, hands-down best (iTunes sample ends before it really starts) COME CLEAN - Like a flashback to raw punk ala Curve. RECOVERY - Stellar wrap up.

rewarding purchase

Although I would be hesitant to claim this is Curves best work, it still shines brightly. I highly recommend it. There are a few songs reminescint of their earlier work, meaning, for example; Fait accomplice and Horror Head. Come on Itunes, where are the rest of their albums?
