From brash and playful fireworks of joyful abandon, to dark corners where regret and uncertainty lurk, "Swimming Around in the Drift" weaves a comforting old afghan of artisanally crafted songs, each one more intricate than the last. Beautifully and intimately recorded and mixed, you can hear the space and time all over these tracks. Glorious guitars shine golden on old Polaroids of accordions and toy bells, sounding at some points as if Daniel Lanois got lost at Coney Island, while at others evoking the warm joy within deep cold that is unique to native Yoopers. This is timeless, seductive and emotional work that speaks both lyrically and musically of longing and loss, while looking ahead to an unknown future with just the right amount of semi-detached hope. And speaking of futures, "Swimming Around in the Drift" definines one bright heck of a future for Jared Nelson Smith, whether he chooses the role of songwriter, producer, engineer or crack session cat, for he fills all those shoes and more with ease. Bravo, sir.
Refreshing new tunes
The many musical talents of Jared Nelson smith can really be heard throughout this new album. Keep them coming and I'll keep listening!
It's in the Journey
I am so appreciative and in awe of an artist putting forth such earnest feelings and talents as rare and as broad as JNS. This music is fun and inventive with great pop catches, and has a tasty tinge of classic country. I suppose categorizing it as northern indie rock, would be accurate but I feel a true american blues quality that comes through in the range of influences as well as instruments used.
This album struggles with seasons, surroundings, and absolute humanity. Reminds us that the journey, no matter what path, is what's important.
This one-man band, engineer, and producer is a masterpiece! I look forward to whatever comes from this talent.
