Swingin' On the Korner: Live at Keystone Korner

Swingin' On the Korner: Live at Keystone Korner

Red Garland is most famously remembered as the pianist for the landmark Miles Davis Quintet (1955-1958), but he also recorded often as a leader. This previously unreleased live material culled from a weeklong run in 1977—also featuring Davis bandmate Philly Joe Jones on drums and bassist Leroy Vinnegar—will remind many of how capable Garland was a leader, soloing with delicacy and ferocity, never straying far from the blues and constantly pushing the music forward. Highlights include the expansive “Love for Sale,” the jaunty “Bags’ Groove,” and “Billy Boy,” where the pianist’s rhythmic playing is a lesson in dynamics.
