Editors’ Notes

For a major worldwide pop star, George Michael has a relatively small discography; the 27 years of his solo career that preceded the live Symphonica saw the British songsmith unleash just five albums. So every new record from him feels like an event—but in this case, it literally was an event. Michael's 2011 Symphonica tour found him backed by an orchestra, presenting lushly arranged takes on tunes from all across his discography. But despite the grand scale, one of the most striking things about Michael's performances here is their tasteful restraint. For all his range and power—he once briefly filled Freddie Mercury's shoes fronting Queen, for heaven's sake—he never pushes his singing over the top. If anything, this set solidifies Michael's position as one of the classiest pop stars of his generation, as he tackles a mix of covers (everything from jazz standards to the Elton John obscurity "Idol") and originals ranging from the soulful Faith-era ballad "One More Try" to the changing-times plaint "John and Elvis Are Dead."

Devastatingly Beautiful Voice

For 30 years, George Michael has been entertaining us with wonderful pop melodies and a singularly distinctive voice. But nowhere does his voice shine as it does when he puts it toward ballads and torch songs. This much anticipated album, Symphonica, is a blend of classic George Michael penned tunes, along with some of his best covers. The album was produced by the late, great Phil Ramone, so the production is guaranteed to be exceptional. "Wild Is The Wind" is the first available download and is a beautifully arranged piece. George's voice is startingly clear and he uses it brilliantly to evoke the emotion of the song. This album is sure to be a wonderful addition to the George Michael library.

A nice surprise, but....

Nice...and better to have this than no new release at all. But it's been 10 YEARS since his last proper album & I'm beyond frustrated. George needs to get in the studio & make some new, fun, upbeat pop songs for us to enjoy. Stop being so slow, George.

great album but missing great tracks

I love the album but I am extremely critical of the fact that several signature songs that were played frequently at the concerts were left out. I am ok with going to a town and let her down easy because they were played throughout the tour. I am upset that Kissing A Fool was left out. That is my biggest disappointment. I would have replaced Roxanne with Kissing A Fool and I would have included Waiting For The Day which was played at the opening of the second half of the show. I would have included It Doesn't Really Matter At All, Safe, and possibly Patience or the Amy Winehouse Cover of Love Is A Loosing Game. All in All i am excited about the album and the two songs I have are great. I just figured that some of these songs have been done live on other albums. Really wanted to have a live version of kissing a fool. Cowboys and Angels I feel will be the most satisfying track on the album, based on the ways it was rearranged for the live performance.
