Beethoven reborn

John Eliot Gardiner carefully researched these works in order to be as faithful as possible to Beethoven's original intentions. Though this research is indeed scholarly that is not to mean that these performances are cold and academic - far from it - these are bold, fresh performances that breathe new life into these works. The Orchestre Revolutionary et Romantique perform on period instruments following Beethoven's original, smaller, orchestrations. A smaller ensemble doesn't mean a smaller sound, far from it, the result is cleaner with each line coming through more clearly than we're accustomed to hearing. These performances can be recommended to anyone interested in these symphonies, not just period instrument enthusiasts.

The Most Faithful Beethoven Recording

I've had this album for years and it is without doubt the definitive collection for Beethoven lovers. Back when it was released, there was a lot of hype and pomp surrounding Gardiner's "faithful" interpretation of the 9 symphonies, just as the way Beethoven had originally intended. And believe me, buy the collection and you'll realize just why folks like me say listeners will be rewarded.

Striking performances

I normally have a tin ear when it comes to telling one performance from another, but when I heard Gardiner's conclusion to the Fifth Symphony on the radio, I immediately came home and ordered this set. As the other reviewer notes, the clarity and the way every line of music, every instrument, participates is breathtaking.
