The definitive version of an outstanding symphony

Kleiber, who passed on earlier this year, brings his perfectionism to Brahms in this 1981 recording done with the Vienna Philharmonic. In my humble opinion, this is one of the top five symphonies of the eighteenth century, and a must for even the most casual classical listener. And this is recording to obtain - a legendary performance.

19th Century...

Actually, this is one of the outstanding symphonies of the 19th century. Brahms was born in 1833 and wasn't even a twinkle in his old man's eye in the 18th century! Sorry to nitpick but I agree, THE best recording of a great symphony. Too bad it's such a skimpy CD content. Worth it though.

This is by far one of the best interpretations of Brahms 4th that I've ever heard. At same time sincere, evocative, powerful. The final movement comes through with the knock out blow!
