Album Review

Supposedly, the guitarist for extreme metallists Malzan — Tobias Buck — was recently looking to pursue his interest in "hardcore and Swedish death metal." Hence, the formation of his side project, Neaera. But the end result isn't that far removed from his full-time gig, as evidenced by Neaera's third release, 2007's Armamaentarium — so the whole "needing another outlet for other styles" explanation doesn't really hold up. Either way, fans of extreme metal loaded with vocals that alternate between guttural growls and high pitched squeals, metronome-perfect drumming, and precise riffing will certainly approve of Buck's "hobby" band — especially after hearing such delightful little ditties as album opener "Spearheading the Spawn" and the title track.

Neaera - Armamentarium

This album is this best album I own! The guitar riffs and solos are greatly put together, the drumming is amazing and the high and low pitch vocals blend perfectly together. Buy the WHOLE album. Top 3 Songs: Spearheading the Spawn, Armamentarium, and The Orphaning

WTF? How freaking talented are these guys? This disc opens at a nuclear pace and doesn't let up for 11 straight tracks! You won't find any filler tunes...and I personally rate every song a SOLID 5 out 5 stars! These guys get it! I have only recently stumbled across this band, but these are by far the BEST discs (I have ALL 3) in my 12,000 mp3 arsenal~!~ Do not hesitate 1 this disc if you love metal, metalcore, deathmetal, Darkest Hour, As I lay Dying, All That Remains, The Absence, Diecast, Killswitch Engage, Five Finger Death Punch...and so many more! This disc alone is in a talent class ALL BY ITSELF! Phenominal...period! Rick Reulecke Colorado Springs, CO

Guitarist Tobias Buck formed Neaera in 2003, initially as a side project away from his usual death metal band, Münster, Germany's Malzan. Vocalist Benny Hilleke and drummer Sebastian Heldt came on board first, then former Malzan guitarist Benjamin Donath was added, but on bass. The band's death metal meets power metal sound began to form and numerous gigs were played under the name the Ninth Gate before it was decided a second guitarist and a name change were in order. Meanwhile, Malzan had fallen...
