iTunes Review

As Earlimart changed musical direction over the years, Ariana Murray and Aaron Espinoza have moved away from grunge-inspired work and started to make music that should be admired by fans of Grandaddy and Sun Airway. On System Preferences, Earlimart paints a pop landscape looking through Beatles-tinted granny glasses. Song fragments drip with Lennon/McCartney sweetness, such as the airy vocal chorus and harpsichord on "U & Me" and the piano-driven descending melody on "Shame." Espinoza's hollow vocals and piano notes on the somber "A Goodbye" feel very Imagine-era John Lennon. Elsewhere, there is Elliott Smith–style delicacy (especially beautiful on "Sweater Weather") and even a hint of Lush/Mazzy Star twilight glow (the woozy "10 Years"). Espinoza and Murray's vocal pairing on "97 Heart Attack," a darkly swaggering song that settles in under the skin, is both intimate and powerful. The collection's most energetic tune, "Internet Summer," is a gorgeous, propulsive number that feels somewhat out of place on this quiet, introspective record. (That doesn't mean we don't love it.)

I wait years for days like today...

...when a new Earlimart album is released! It's been four years, and System Preferences is definitely worth the wait. Each album from these guys hits my soul in just the right way.

System Preferences may be Earlimart's best album to date!
So worth the wait

There really is nothing here that makes me wish to hear rthe album all over again. I'd rather listen to repeated plays of "Mentor Tormentor" or Hymn And Her". This just lacks.

Formed: 1996 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

The coed members of Earlimart favor a midtempo approach to their start-stop motions of experimental post-punk, dreamy indie pop, and folky undertones. Named after a small California town located between Los Angeles and Fresno, Earlimart's unconventional songwriting structure drew early comparisons to the Pixies, Sonic Youth, X, and Sparklehorse. This attention resulted in a deal with Devil in the Woods Records, which released the albums Filthy Doorways and Kingdom of Champions in the winter of 2000....
