Album Review

The influence of Ali Thomson's older brother, Doug, is immediately evident on the keys and vibe of this young Scot's debut. Presumably, Thomson looked up to his sib because Doug had gone Hollywood in a big way, playing with Supertramp. Actually, Ali's excellent second single, "Live Every Minute," may be as good as anything Supertramp recorded (in the '80s at least). The sweet, sweet music of the titular Top 20 charter conjures Wings over Venus and Mars, meaning it's fluffy but fine radio pop. "Jaime" might be some kind of "Hey Joe" rewrite, but probably not, as Thomson keeps things light. "Saturday Heartbreaker" shows there's a little Graham Parker in everyone. Can't fault a guy for striving to make a good commercial record. And Thomson mixes his melodic rock with many different styles, including acoustic calypso, before he fades away like an afternoon dream.

A Good Re-Recorded Version, but Would Love to Have the Original!

Ali Thomson's A&M Records LP "Take a Little Rhythm," released in 1980, was an outstanding mixture of power pop and reflective ballads reminiscent of Supertramp (Thomson's brother was a member of that band) and yet unique in its own right. This re-recorded version of the title track is solid and well worth your money but I would love to see the entire original album up on iTunes. "Take a Little Rhythm" is but one track from the full album that has remained relevant nearly three decades later.

Brilliant! Where are the albums?

Fantastic to hear this on i tunes. I wish the two brilliant albums were also available. They deserve to be heard. Come on i tunes.

Ali Thomson climbed the charts in the early '80s with the title track to his melodic set, Take a Little Rhythm. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, young Thomson stayed home and struggled with his multiplication tables while big bro Doug played bass in the British beat sect the Alan Brown Set. Doug and John Helliwell left this unit for Supertramp, and Ali began to see the benefits of an occupation in rock. Ali started singing and playing piano with regional bands. In the mid-'70s, he moved to London and landed...
