14 Songs, 53 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

R&B singer Kelela’s deeply personal debut LP does just what it says on the label. Over beats from Jam City, Bok Bok, Kingdom, and Arca—which swerve from warped and aqueous to warm and lush to icy and danceable—Kelela turns her emotions inside out with a sultriness and self-assuredness that few underground artists can muster. She’s tough and forthright, tender and subdued on songs about breakups (“Frontline”), makeups (“Waitin”), and pickups (“LMK”)—and the way she spins from one mode to the next is dizzying in the best way possible.

Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics.

Experimental R&B

Kelela is so progressive it's crazy! I'm so excited for her official debut LP! Her runs give me goosebumps and her dark hazy beats set the tone!!!!

Best album of 2017 so far.

The production is entrancing. The vocals are amazing. A beautifully crafted album that tells a story from beginning to end.

Exhilarating

Cut 4 Me was illuminating, Hallucinogen was spellbinding, and Take Me Apart is going to be prodigious in all itself. LMK is a wonderful single, brewing dark instrumentals crossed with emotional vocals, I can't imagine how the 14 other tracks sonically sound. It's going to be an experience for sure. Thank you, Kelela. In all your glitz and gleam you shine gloriously. 💖
