EDITORS’ NOTES
Self Portrait is the boldest act of self-definition ever made by a major singer/songwriter. Fed up with fans’ insistence on making him their countercultural guru, Dylan took a drastic detour. On this double album dominated by covers, he brings his Nashville Skyline croon to traditional folk (“Little Sadie"), ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll (The Everly Brothers’ “Take a Message to Mary”), and tunes by his contemporaries (Gordon Lightfoot’s “Early Morning Rain”), making a striking statement about his identity by placing himself in this idiosyncratically curated context.

Ratings and Reviews
An ignored recording
But plenty to enjoy here, I revisit this recording quite often, sample some tracks and see what I mean. Days of 49, Wigwam, Belle Isle, All the tired horses are all classics that evoke another time period quite wonderfully. I believe the album was panned and misunderstood because it was released during the psychedelic era and people just dismissed it not knowing there were some real gems on the tracks. Nobody even bothered to review it...so I did. In time it will be rediscovered.
self portrait
Bought this album when it first came out always liked it although nobody else did not even dylan some great tracks just have to listen
Grows with age
OK, so Dylan has no business doing "The Boxer." But others, like "Copper Kettle" or "All the Tired Horses" touch me & when I play them people ask where they came from- a hidden gem w/ some nuggets
