Album Review

After Modern English's first split in the late '80s, Robbie Grey led the band through various incarnations, but the majority of the original lineup — Grey plus Mick Conroy, Gary McDowell, and Stephen Walker — regrouped at the tail-end of the 2000s. After years of touring, Modern English recorded Take Me to the Trees, featuring production and mixing from fellow 4AD label alum Martyn Young (Colourbox, M/A/R/R/S). "You're Corrupt" and "Sweet Revenge," two songs released ahead of the album, display a nervy post-punk edge — if not quite the blistering, in-the-red approach — akin to that of the band's earliest work., Rovi

The summery hooks and warm lyrics of "I Melt with You" gave listeners the impression that Modern English were an upbeat pop act, but the single, first released in 1982, was actually an anomaly in the band's early discography. Formed in Colchester, England in 1979, Modern English were originally a punk group called the Lepers. Featuring Robbie Grey (vocals, guitar), Gary McDowell (guitar), and Richard Brown (drums), the Lepers performed mainly at parties. After Mick Conroy (bass) and Stephen Walker...
