Album Review

An ambitious, big ball of worship and revolution, 116 Clique member Sho Baraka's third album was influenced by the W.E.B. Du Bois essay of the same name, something he reinforces with some rage during the tense opener "Bethesda." "I wanna sell records yet I feel eager to write political tunes that give a certain finger" the Christian rapper declares, but it's the tyranny of man that keeps him from his goal as "I'm thirsty for His revelations, now where's the colored fountain?" is delivered in no uncertain terms. Later, it's a racial slur re-appropriated during the key track "Jim Crow" ("I feel trapped in a crazy place/Asking the Lord for amazing grace") which may be common in mainstream hip-hop, but it's a revolutionary move on the Christian side of the genre, making this a CCM release parents may want to discuss with the young ones before playing. That said, Sho Baraka's writing is in top form, all the elaborate productions are on point, and his heartfelt performances here suggest he feels his art would be blunted if he compromised. Even if Talented 10th is controversial, from Sho Baraka's angle, it's "true talk" and if it ruffles some feathers, that's exactly what it was designed to do.

Talented 10th

Sho Baraka is without a doubt one of the most intelligent and provocative Christians and musicians of our time. Not only is he smart, but he is musically innovative, always pushing the boundaries sonically, and challenging people with messages they probably aren't ready to hear. This album is no different. In fact, it's Sho at his finest, collaberating with other talented artists to create something different, thought provoking, and challenging. In essence, it's everything art should be.

I'm not sure...

I just am not sure about this album after my first listen through... Lions and Liars was off the chain amazing... and I *only* listen to Christian Rap anymore. I love Lecrae, Trip, Andy Minaeo, Teda, etc.

But it just doesn't seem as anointed as his previous stuff... like on Denzel... What's the point of him using a secular rap like we all know has a curse word and replacing it with class only to have Suzy follow up with with kind of the same line with the same word in a "You can go straight to.... Hello operator" kind of vibe. Not to mention he just seems more focused on racism, not necessarily in a negative way, but pushing it more than what Christian rap is supposed to be about and that's Jesus man.

Maybe I'm just incredibly disappointed because I highly valued Sho and think he's probably the wittest of any Christian rappers with his puns and analogies and whatnot... something just doesn't seem right to me.

Disappointed

Honestly I am disappointed. I buy Christian rap albums because it doesn't cuss or have explicit content. It doesn't have explicit content obviously but it cusses. I understand making a point about racism, but really you can do it without cussing. I am sorry but my respect level has dropped.

A founding member of the 116 Clique, Christian rapper Sho Baraka was born in Alberta, Canada but was raised in Southern California during the rise of gangsta rap. Sho loved the music, but watching many of his friends go to jail after joining the gangsta lifestyle influenced the aspiring rapper to choose a different path. He left for college and Texas, but rap pulled him back in, this time with a Christian spin as he formed the 116 Clique in 2005 with friends Trip Lee, Lecrae, and Tedashii. He launched...
