character-driven hip hop comedy

'Tales from the Velvet Pocket' is a very refreshing take on hip hop. The beats are 60's and 70's exotic/lounge-influenced, the raps are raunchy, clever and hilarious. The concepts are outlandish and over the top. Overall, these guys are doing something that has been largely missing in hip hop music over the past few years: creating a thematic LP that flows together, not just a collection of random singles and cameos. From the Cuban Linx-inspired intro spoof 'Sonislordwerdgod', to all the various Phone-Sex Velour Hotline mis-adventures, to the story-based tales of premature ejaculation on 'Flim Flam Man' and defecation blues on 'Doo Doo Draws,' this album definitely has you covered in the humor department. The beats are great throughout, very layered and textured, and always sticking to the Loungey theme... I really hope an instrumental version of the album is in the works! Quality release overall, would love to see what a live show with these guys is like !

Found it on accident...

...And I'm not disapointed at all, these guys are my type of scum; but make sure you follow the storyline from begining to end it's very entertaining, with that said it reminds me of the first Beatnuts Intoxicated Deamons EP (1993) tight production and dope lyrics with very good story telling.

I get it.....

OK at first I had no idea what was going on til the 2nd song in. "Step right up" put me in place of a filthy lounge saloon, where the bathrooms walls are covered in centerfolds of Linda Lovelace, Betty Page, and Marilyn Monroe. They are like a 70's porn star, lounge, hiphop act. I got the chance to see their performance at the SANDBYTHETON show and they were sick. Quality showmen, and lyrically athletic. These guys are funny, dark, and cynical....the way I like it, and rub it.
