Editors’ Notes

Dylan took a monumental leap between his self-titled debut and this masterful follow-up. Even the most optimistic fans were stunned at the progress he'd made in a few short months: Where his debut had mostly engaging but straight-ahead folk and blues covers — and only two original songs — the aptly named Freewheelin' was an explosion of imagination and inspiration. Scathing social commentary ("Blowin' in the Wind," "Masters of War," "A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall"), eloquent love songs ("Girl from the North Country"), quirky and bizarre rambles ("Bob Dylan's Blues"), poignant reminiscences ("Bob Dylan's Dream") all find their way into the mix. One look at the remarkable song list, brimming with hands-down lyrical masterpieces, tells you that folk music would never be the same after Bob Dylan delivered this album to the world in 1963, at the ripe old age of 22.

Customer Reviews

Essential. Materpiece.

Important, eternally relevant, perfect. If I truly had to pick an essential Bob Dylan album, this would be it. Fantastic. Flawless. Masters of War one of the greatest war protest songs of all time. Life-changing. Insightful. You owe it to yourself to own this Dylan album...if no other.

One of the Greatest Albums...EVER

Okay, so this might not be his official debut album, but it is Bob Dylan's first album to show what a ground-breaking, breath-takingly wonderful songwriter he was (and remains today). This is a MUST HAVE...every single track is worth having!

Lyrically Speaking, This Album Is The Best Album Of All Time.... Hands Down.

From the beautiful imagery in "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall" to the bitter cry of "Masters of War," this album showed Dylan to be the greatest songwriter/poet who has ever lived. This album will rock your world. Buy it.

Bob Dylan's influence on popular music is incalculable. As a songwriter, he pioneered several different schools of pop songwriting, from confessional singer/songwriter to winding, hallucinatory, stream-of-consciousness narratives. As a vocalist, he broke down the notion that a singer must have a conventionally good voice in order to perform, thereby redefining the vocalist's role in popular music. As a musician, he sparked several genres of pop music, including electrified folk-rock and country-rock....
