iTunes Editors’ Notes

With Target Earth, the veteran Canadian thrash metal band Voivod faced the daunting task of replacing its original guitarist, the late Denis D'Amour. Daniel Mongrain is clearly up to the task, and he does a particularly impressive job on the time-shifting, over-complicated riffing madness of "Kaleidos" and the equally intense, compressed craziness of "Mechanical Mind," the album's obvious standout. He's working overtime here with original bassist Jean-Yves Thériault, who returns for his first Voivod album since 1991's Angel Rat. Yet it remains to be seen where Mongrain can take the group. Target Earth does an excellent job at maintaining the status quo, providing assurance to Voivod's fans that the group can keep up with its familiar ways. "Corps Etranger" has enough speed to keep the band moving for years ahead. "Kluskap O'Kom" gives Denis Belanger his best vocal showcase and proves that the rhythm section is tuned up and ready for more. "Empathy for the Enemy" sets things up perfectly for a power-chord explosion. If this album is a test of sorts, Voivoid passes with flying colors and guitar picks.

VOIVOD ARE SIMPLY THE BEST

The best metal band ever. What a special privilege to be able to stream the album for a few days before owning it was amazing, thank you! Getting all eras of VOIVOD into one exceptional album is without words. From track to track brings out the best in each player in the band, who make it seem effortlessly to produce such a work of musical art even 3 decades later. Grateful they've never stopped (Away has always been the core). I'm selfish when I say I'm glad this is the VOIVOD we all know and love! They simply set themselves apart from anything else out there! And I've wanted this like every fan has! This album cranks out heavy hitting metal punching and bone crushing riffs, drums and vox non stop. Chewy has tapped into the exact meaning of where Piggy (RIP) left off, and shows off his dynamic own talents, spectacular! And the return of Blacky was just bound to happen! Thank you! Snake summoning excellent vocals throughout is just mesmerizing, while Away's perfect genius rhythm and thunderous drumming placed on every song pulls it all together harmoniously. I think this is truly one of the best VOIVOD albums ever made! 5 STARS!

LEGENDARY CANADIAN TECHNO THRASHERS HAVE RETURNED

Surely this is the most antiipated thrash records from legendary Voivod....and what a great start it is for the revival of classic thrash metal this year. This record is far more powerful with elements of voivod's traditional sound, intact and prominent since the Killing Technology/Dimension Hatross era.

Pretty good

It's good! At least from what i've heard. But the album art... wat. It's horrid.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Voivod (singer Denis "Snake" Belanger, guitarist Denis "Piggy" d'Amour, drummer Michel "Away" Langevin, and bassist Jean-Yves "Blacky" Theriault) were one of the first thrash bands from Canada to gain popularity outside of their home country. From their beginnings in the early '80s, their main goal was to be different from anyone else, and thus they incorporated odd musical tempos and futuristic story lines into their songs, often dealing with technology...
