Matsuev’s thunderous musicality is showcased with this magnificent recording.
Great Tchaikovsky Piano Concerti
After over 50 years, I thought I'd try a new Tchaikovsky Competition Winner to complement my venerated Cliburn 1st PCon which I’ve had in multiple formats since it was published in 1958. Matsuev is a considerable pianist in the Russian tradition. He and Gergiev with the Mariinsky band play the heqq out of these concertos. BUT the feature, for me, is the outstanding sound of the “Mastered for iTunes” (Mfi) edition along with the beautiful digital booklet which accompanies — stunning photos of the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg. Apple hasn’t given us much in the way of tech details on what Mastered for iTunes really means. But the sound is stunning, detailed, warm, and natural — virtually indistinguishable from a CD when played on high-end equipment. Based on the Apple white paper on the subject, it seems to be the option of the copyright holder to meet the requirements of Mfi. But on the evidence of this recording I hope all the main classical labels get on that bandwagon. Truly a remarkable release: musically, technically, and aurally. Highly recommended.
Great Tchaikovsky CD to own
Brilliant pianist and conductor with wonderful orchestra! Definitely worth collecting. His 2nd concerto is rare but beautiful, specially the 2nd movement, such fabulous trio formation ;-)
