iTunes Review

Young Jeezy is not the first rapper to turn the lifestyle of the dope dealer into a lavish panorama — Scarface, Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z all examined the crack trade from multiple viewpoints — but the key to Thug Motivation 101 isn’t its content but its delivery. The album becomes a paean to wealth and success not only through Jeezy’s couplets and chanted choruses, but through the monstrous beats provided by master producers like Shawty Redd, Drumma Boy, and Mannie Fresh. “Standing Ovation,” “Gangsta Music” and “Get Ya Mind Right” are tidal waves of sound that embody the notion of success at any cost. The songs engulf the listener in Jeezy’s ethos, and whether or not you are willing, the album forcefully indoctrinates its participants into the way of the trap. It might not be the most technically complex rap album, but Thug Motivation 101 has a rare unity of vision. The theme here is relentless determination, and Jeezy’s ideology doesn’t stick it in your ear so much as detonates throughout your entire body.

2005: Year of the Snowman

Jeezy is 1 of the most exciting new rappers in the game. Hes got a style and flow like you've never heard before. Plus hes got the lyrical abilities that most southern rappers lack. On "Standing Ovation" Jeezy proves he can spit some serious punchlines: "my brains pulse thru my veins, man i cant understand it/infatuation with the birds i watch animal planet......&...."Guided by the truckload like the bread people/ i got a 6th sense i stack dead people." This album is more than the South, if you're not feeling it you need to just quit listening to rap altogether. Jeezy's got the promise to grow into one of the biggest names in the game, The Jay-z of the south? Im warning u.....Thaaatts riiiiiighhht!

Atlanta-based Young Jeezy originally planned on having a background role in the music industry — as a businessman, not as a rapper. Years before making his first Def Jam album — Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101, released in July 2005 — he set up Corporate Thugz Entertainment and promoted Cash Money releases. From there, he branched out as a label boss and artist in his own right, releasing albums and mixtapes. Come Shop wit' Me, his independently distributed debut from 2003, allegedly...
