Editors’ Notes

Released at the apex of Britain’s acid-house movement, Technique is a complete expansion of the club sounds that had influenced New Order since their inception. “Round & Round,” “Mr. Disco,” and “Dream Attack” fully absorb the throbbing pulse and programmed rhythms of techno without abandoning New Order’s trademarks; namely, Peter Hook’s heady basslines, Bernard Sumner’s modestly yearning vocals, and the band’s all-encompassing feel for a poignant melody. Even as the band explores the terrain of club music, Technique delivers songs gilded in the classic New Order mold. The collision of pop melody and sheets of distorted guitar in “Run” offers the same delectable, delirious rush that likeminded peers the Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine were delivering during the same era. “Love Less” is a lovelorn classic on par with “Age of Consent” and “Love Vigilantes.” Jangly guitars merge with one of Hook’s insistent, gallant basslines as Sumner’s boyish voice translates the sting of unrequited love.

A+ release

This might be my fav NO's a toss-up between this and "Power, Corruption..." Every song could be a single and they really created the term, "dance-rock". You have a hybrid of club tracks mixed in with straight-up rock songs, it's really what NO is all about.

This album is simply amazing! I have listened to this since 1989 and it never sounds outdated or tiresome. The emotional whirlwind that uncovers itself is pure and raw- the music and lyrics tap into unique angles on wantonness and desire. Favorites are Round and Round, Mr. Disco, Fine Time and Dream Attack. At minimal, get Round and Round and listen to it for a few days- you'll be hooked. A MUST have!

I used to hate new wave

Then I heard Technique. New Order's most sophisticated release holds a special place in my heart. Their most dancy and experimental release has acid house improv ("Fine Time") some feel-good synthpop ("Mr. Disco", "Vanishing Point") as well as post-punk rooted tunes ("Guilty Partner"). The album also has Peter Hook's classic humor and cheesy-lovable hooks. The last of New Order's flawless releases, this won't disappoint like the rest of their catalog from "Movement" until this classic.

Rising from the ashes of the legendary British post-punk unit Joy Division, the enigmatic New Order triumphed over tragedy to emerge as one of the most influential and acclaimed bands of the 1980s; embracing the electronic textures and disco rhythms of the underground club culture many years in advance of its contemporaries, the group's pioneering fusion of new wave aesthetics and dance music successfully bridged the gap between the two worlds, creating a distinctively thoughtful and oblique brand...
