EDITORS’ NOTES

Plenty of comedians take cracks at hip-hop, but few understand it like Eric and Jeff Rosenthal. The brothers and sketch comics got their start dissecting rap songs online before eventually recording their own parody songs as ItsTheReal. But while other satirical acts (Lonely Island Boys, “Weird Al”) traffic in covers, the Rosenthals use original songs, allowing them to flex their expertise while simultaneously mocking their white privilege. On Teddy Bear Fresh, the duo recruit bona fide hip-hop tastemakers like Just Blaze and Tunji Ige while rapping about the Dave Matthews Band (“Bands’ll make her Dancing Nancies") and non-existent record deals (“We gon’ stay independent ’til we die… unless a label gives us health insurance”).
