iTunes Review

This eponymous 1988 debut, with its smooth grooves and funky, jazz-laced beats, helped shape the new jack swing sound. The club-ready “Don’t Clap...Just Dance” is a standout, while the sultry vocals of “You Can Call Me Crazy” echo Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative.” “Teddy’s Jam” even has a touch of gospel—though it’s way too slick for church. At times evoking a New Edition vibe, Guy show off rich, soulful harmonies throughout, always with an eye toward romance.

I can't believe GUY'S first album is on Itunes. Not only that, it's loaded with the remixes that I've been craving for since I heard them last! For all those GUY fans out there this is a must have and for those that don't know, you need to get yourself educated with the history of the originators of new jack swing. This seminal R&B trio was the first group to sport the new jack swing sound, essentially traditional soul vocals melded to hip-hop beats, with credit for the genre's invention going to founder, multi-instrumentalist, and super-producer Teddy Riley. Riley formed his first band, Wreckx-N-Effect, while still a teenager, with brothers Markell Riley and Brandon Mitchell; Guy followed a few years later in 1987. Its first incarnation featured vocalists Aaron Hall and Timmy Gatling. Their self-titled debut...
