iTunes Review

Tell Mama is an album so powerful that it nearly overwhelms the senses. By 1967, when Etta James traveled from Chicago to Muscle Shoals, Alabama’s Fame Studio, she was already a veteran entertainer, a master of gritty, house rocking blues shouters and slow burning ballads like the immortal “At Last”. But producer Rick Hall, and Fame’s incomparable studio musicians brought out a side of Etta that had not previously made it to record. Tell Mama presents us with a definitive portrait of Etta James, the deep soul shouter. Tracks like the sweat stained groover “My Mother In Law” and the frenetic title track prove that Etta could flow over a southern groove as effortlessly as her contemporaries in Memphis and New Orleans, while stunning ballads like the slow stepping “The Love of My Man” and the sorrowful “I’d Rather Go Blind” rival anything Aretha ever put to wax in their sheer emotional power.

Etta James!

Etta James is in my opinion what all other genres of music were missing. She has that soulful touch to each of her songs and yet still finds time to sing her heart out and show off her vocal talents. Songs as upbeat as "Tell Mama" to soulful blues like "The Love of my man" you can't go wrong with this album!

The Queen

This may rank as the best soul/blues album of all time. The incredible version of 'I'd Rather Go Blind' is worth the price of admission on its own. The rest are frosting on a very, very good cake.

Few female R&B stars enjoyed the kind of consistent acclaim Etta James received throughout a career that spanned six decades; the celebrated producer Jerry Wexler once called her "the greatest of all modern blues singers," and she recorded a number of enduring hits, including "At Last," "Tell Mama," "I'd Rather Go Blind," and "All I Could Do Was Cry." At the same time, despite possessing one of the most powerful voices in music, James only belatedly gained the attention of the mainstream audience,...
