iTunes Editors’ Notes

Mark Dyer was exposed to the rich traditions of Jamaican music as a youth growing up in Clarendon, Jamaica, where his father ran a small but popular shop that hosted late-night soundsystem parties. Upon moving to Portmore, Dyer quickly secured an apprenticeship with Admiral Tibet, a sweet-voiced singer famed as one of the dancehall era's most politically and spiritually conscious vocalists. Dyer proved a swift learner, and his regal but pugnacious bearing behind the microphone quickly earned him the moniker Warrior King. His first success as a recording artist came in 2001 with “Virtuous Woman,” a Michael Johnson–produced cut on the gently loping “Zion Gate” riddim. In the decade that followed, Warrior King released a string of highly successful albums. His fourth full-length, Tell Me How Me Sound—a collaboration with veteran producer Colin “Bulby” York—is among his most rewarding efforts. Bulby cut his teeth crafting hard dancehall riddims for the likes of Beenie Man, Capleton, and Mad Cobra, but on Tell Me How Me Sound he offers up a set a reflective roots productions ideally suited to Warrior King’s relaxed delivery.
