iTunes, meet Matt Ellis

Matt Ellis has found an identity. This album, "Tell the People", is his second full album after his first, "Matt Ellis", and the difference is considerable. He's moved on from a rehashing of the same (good) song on his original album, to this. And what a move it's been. I remember how I first came across this album, and looking back, I never would have found it except by chance. But you don't want to hear this story. This album is absolutely amazing. The songs have great hooks, on-the-spot lyrics and melodies, and when combined with Ellis's voice, make something that's as moving as it is deep and mourning. The opening song is the best song, with strong lyrics and a entrancing melody. This goes on to "Hey Mr", a song that's different but just as good. As the album goes on, it weaves a wonderful tapestry of memory and longing, highlighted by songs such as "My Mistake", and the more frenzied song "Go". It wraps up with "When I'm Without You", a duet between Ellis and a lady. (Sorry I can't be more specific; I can't seem to find her name.) All in all, five stars. A wonderful treat from such an obscure artist, someone who I hope will be treated well in the coming years.

This CD Was a Beautiful Surprise

Rarely do I seek out an "unknown" musician after hearing their CD but the week after I heard it, I found out that Matt Ellis was playing in my neighborhood and I went to see him live...a wonderful show. I sought out this musician after receiving this CD while in Joshua Tree on a solo camping trip and it has pretty much become my desert soundtrack. My favs in no order: Hey Mister, How Far to Go, My Mistake, Walk over Me, When I'm Without You. So refresing to find a talented musician who sounds as good live as on a CD and vise versa. I can't wait to hear what he does in the future.
